How Tribes Got Their Names: A Montana Example
35-minute DVD, with 70 page teacher guide
Suggested for 4th -- 5th grades
Exploring the origin of contemporary tribal names.
DVD
This 35-minute DVD explores the history behind the contemporary
names of 12 tribal groups located on seven Indian reservations in
Montana. Through map reference, students learn where these tribes
used to live and where they live now. Tribal educators and
elders share the history of their individual tribal names as they
were known in Plains Indian Sign Language.
The film examines how tribal names were translated incorrectly or
misinterpreted by French traders and trappers, a practice that
also occurred with tribal groups in other regions of the US. As
students learn the signs for the tribes and the names tribal
members call themselves, they gain insights into how various
misnomers caused long-lasting misunderstandings.
